Sam Smith: Singer/Guitarist
I am Sam Smith, a singing guitar player living in Bluffton South Carolina. I am 53 years old and have been living here for over 15 years. I have been entertaining in the area since 1998, first as a solo act, then with the Band South Wind, and now, again, solo. My genres run from Country, Blue Grass, and Folk to Classic Rock, Soul and Blues. I do only covers, so every song I perform is familiar. Between my rhythm acoustic guitar (very little lead, sorry), my harmony/vocal processor (sparingly and tastefully used), and classically trained voice, my songs always please. I have never had a bad review, ever.
My local musical career consists of the following, though this is not even close to a complete list, as it would be too lengthy:
1998 – 2003: Did solo gigs consisting of a few private parties, a weekly 2 night gig at Calvin’s Crab Shack in Bluffton, a pick-up band here and there, special events at Pepper’s Porch in Bluffton, and a summer gig at Hudson’s Seafood on the Dock doing magic and balloon art (you do what you have to).
2003 – 2008: Gigged exclusively with the band South Wind. Myself, and two friends formed this band. We added a fourth a year after we started. We consisted of two rhythm guitars, one lead guitar and one mandolin. The members were:
- Sam Smith (me) : Rhythm Guitar and Lead Vocals
- Bob Faust : Rhythm Guitar and 2nd Lead Vocals
- Bryan Baker : Lead Guitar
- John Sturm : Mandolin and Harmonica
We played a very wide variety of music. We played the Rib Burn-Off, Chili Cook-Off, and a few other events at the Honey Horn Plantation site for several years. Did the Wing-Fest in 2006. Played pro-bono for several charity events. Played most bars and restaurants in the area to include, but in no way limited to; Dosido’s, One Hot Mamas, The Bluffton Ale House, the Okatie Ale House, etc. We did many private parties and weddings. We were basically the house band for Marsh Side Mama’s on Daufuskie Island from 2004 through 2008, playing there on average 2 to 3 week-ends a month. We were voted Best Local Band by the Best of Bluffton elections in 2007.
Since 2008, when the band members went our separate ways, I have been doing solo gigs for private parties, weddings, and the occasional bar. I have mainly been the summer entertainment for The Old Oyster Factory 2009/2010 and the Crazy Crab 2011, where I performed to raved reviews about 6 nights a week from May through Labor Day.
I am seeking some long-term gigs for the “off” seasons. I assure you I will be well received by tourists and locals alike. I will also accept short-term gigs or “one night stands” if scheduling permits.
Please feel free to review the demo songs on this page. The more “raw” sounding songs were recorded live at one of my gigs. Thank you for any consideration you may give me.
Sincerely,
Sam Smith
